Win-Back Rate
Win-back rate is the share of targeted lapsed clients who returned within the campaign window. Formula: targeted clients returned in-window ÷ targeted clients × 100, reported per segment, against a holdout group. Example: 25 of 100 targeted soft-lapse clients return during a 30-day wave for a 25% segment rate.
Why the holdout is non-negotiable
Some lapsed clients return on their own, natural return that a good adherence system produces anyway. Without a holdout group (targeted-but-uncontacted lookalikes), the win-back rate takes credit for returns the campaign did not cause. The honest claim is always comparative: contacted segments returned X points above holdout. Full measurement discipline, revenue trajectory, repeat-after-return, full cost, is detailed on our win-back strategy page.
Adjacent metrics
Reactivation rate is the operational sibling, ongoing queue work rather than discrete campaigns. Retention rate is the lagging context: win-back moves this quarter's number by recovering last quarter's lapses. Track all three and the story stays honest; track win-back alone and every natural return looks like a campaign victory.
Frequently asked questions
What is win-back rate?
The share of targeted lapsed clients who returned within the campaign window, reported per segment against a holdout group: the holdout separates campaign effect from natural return.
What is a good win-back rate?
No universal number exists: it depends on lapse definition, segment, offer, and window. Judge per-segment rates against holdouts, with revenue trajectory, repeat-after-return, and full cost alongside.
